Greg Oden’s Last Game, Wildcats' Cupboard Isn't Bare
3-time champs have building blocks for future

Lawrence North High School boys basketball coach Jack Keefer saw the words written on the tape of one of his players' wrists before Saturday's Class 4A state championship game. Mike Conley and Greg Oden led the Wildcats to an 80-56 victory over Muncie Central to tie the state records for consecutive state titles (three) and victories (45) in their final game.
At the moment everybody looked where Lawrence North fit into history, Keefer took a glimpse at the future.

"One of the guys had written, 'Last game,' on his wrist, and I thought, 'Man, I don't need to see that,' " said Keefer, whose team became the third in state history -- joining Franklin (1920-22) and Marion (1985-87) -- to win three straight titles and equaled the winning streak set by the Oscar Robertson-led Crispus Attucks teams in 1954-55 and '55-56.

"I've got some young kids I really like. They're going to be good players in their own right, and it'll be interesting to see how they develop. (Starters) Damien (Windham) and Q. (Owen) did such a good job, and they were (junior varsity) players last year. It's amazing those kids can make that big of a jump in one year."

Greg Oden and Conley, both bound for Ohio State University, led the Wildcats to a 103-7 record over the past four years, including 29-0 this season. Next season, Lawrence North won't be the favorite in every game with a schedule that includes Eric Gordon-led North Central.

In addition to Greg Oden (26 points and 11 rebounds Saturday) and Conley (21 points, seven rebounds, three assists), the Wildcats lose starting guard Brandon McDonald (five points, six rebounds, four assists) and reserves Evar Jones and Jason Weigel.
